But Momma....

Actual conversation between Aves & myself this evening...

(after about 10 minutes of pure, unadulterated goofing off and refusing to brush her teeth before bed:)

"Aves, I am only going to ask you one more time. It is getting late. PLEASE be a good girl, come to the sink, and brush your teeth for bed."

(goofing off ensues...)

"Momma is tired, so please stop pushing my buttons. Come here and brush your teeth. Now."

(completely bewildered look upon her face as she looks me up and down for a good thirty seconds...)

"But Momma....you aren't wearing any buttons tonight. How am I supposed to push them?!?"

Happy Fourth!

Happy fourth of July 2010!!!

For the first time in many (many, MANY) moons, we spent the fourth of July NOT in Maine this year. And although it was completely strange not to be watching fireworks from Long Beach on the island, we vowed to make the best of it. And so, we packed up the cooler, the car, and the kiddos to go see the very popular fireworks at the Wakefield Lake.  We got there at 4:00 to secure a good parking spot (check) and a great spot by the lake to watch the show (check.) Auntie Meri & Uncle Mike joined us (with Tanner, of course) which made the festivities even more fun.

The weather was picture-perfect as the day turned into a beautiful summer dusk:

Both kiddos did remarkably well with the waiting...and waiting...and waiting. (Let's put it this way, it was a LOT of waiting for me, and I am almost thirty!)

It was a good thing we brought jammies for everyone since the fireworks didn't even start until 2 hours past bedtime!!

Once the show finally began, they both LOVED it!! (even Gav, who I worried might be scared)

By the end of the night, everyone was all tuckered out and ready for bed...

Happy Fourth folks!

Photo shoot FAIL

Welp, I had a 3:00pm appointment scheduled today for the kiddos to have professional pictures taken together. For the first time in like, a year. It was long overdue and I was super excited to have found them (reasonably priced,) adorable matching outfits for the occasion. I couldn't wait!

However, said photo shoot ended up having to be cancelled.

Why, you may ask?

Here's the breakdown of how today actually went down:

10am- Gav falls & smashes his eye into ottoman in living room. Eye = puffy, red, swollen and squinty. (but otherwise ok thank God!) Redness begins to disappear and I think to myself, there's still hope!

11am- Ave & Gav decide to play in bathroom. Gav smashes Ave in the head with toilet lid. Ave now has impressive gash on forehead, in the shape of toilet lid, in addition to swollen red eyes from crying about it. I think to myself, maybe there's still hope, depending on how quickly she stops sobbing about this incident and perpetuating the swollen eyes look...

12noon-  Gav smashes his lunch (eggplant & pasta) all over himself, including in ears, up nostrils, and in hair. Awesome. I think to myself, I should probably cancel this appointment. Eggplant and pasta sauce isn't easy to scrub off a squirmy baby...

2pm-  Ave decides to "tattoo" herself. With permanent marker. I think to myself, silly me for making an afternoon photo appointment and for attempting to maintain order until 3pm. I then call and cancel the photo appointment.

And proceed to enjoy a 2:30-in-the-afternoon-glass-of-wine.

Ava's thoughts on MJ

True story: Aves came home tonight from a date-night with Daddy, and informed me:

"Momma, I don't want a bedtime story. I just want to watch one of Michael Jackson's music videos instead, ok?"
"Sure," I replied. "Which one?"
"Hmmmm" "I'll watch Beat It tonight. I like that song. And plus, I like Michael better when his hair was short and curly."

The little man gets his first trim!

(ok, his second trim if you count that really painful one he got from the Jewish Dr. at the hospital at 2 days old...but I digress.)

Anyhoo, what better way to ring in your first birthday than with a stylin' new 'do!?

Gav's hair has been getting a bit ("a bit" = "a lot") unruly these days, so we figured once he turned one, we'd take him for this rite of passage into Toddlerhood. And so this afternoon we ventured to the neighborhood SnipIts for the cause. (for those of you who may not be familiar with this establishment, think "Disney meets Supercuts.")    It really is quite the star treatment! The kiddos get to sit in these super comfy salon chairs, while entrancing bubbles are blown continuously for them to gaze at and pop, lollipops of every imaginable flavor are handed to them, and any kids show or movie of their liking is played for them on their own personal flat-screen tv right at their eye level. Everything in the place is cartoonish, and exaggerated in size...i.e. the four-foot tall pair of scissors greeting you at the door. And once the haircut has been successfully completed, the child is awarded a "prize card" to slide into the prize machine (basically a kiddo-sized ATM machine) to retrieve a mystery prize of their choice. Granted, the prices are entirely obscene, but for an occasion as big as a first haircut, well worth every penny.

So anyways, we took Gav this afternoon. Like I mentioned earlier, he was WAY overdue for this trim...need I say more??

At first, he did alright in the chair. He was very interested to see what was going on around him, and to look at all of the fancy and colorful gadgets.

However all of this soon changed once these fun distractions became old news and the realization set in that he was in fact strapped to a chair with a strange, scissor-handed woman attacking his hair!

We brought out the bug guns and offered him lollipops

and even his sippy of milk,

...but as you can see, neither one did the trick. The poor little guy was NOT happy about this haircut. In fact, he was mad. VERY mad:

Finally, he caught a glimpse of a very good looking stud in the mirror,

and thought to himself, "Day-um! I'm lookin' GOOD!"

He could hardly believe that the handsome little man looking back at him in the mirror was, in fact, HIM! Watch out, ladies!

The haircut was finally over and the finished product was awesome!!!

I, of course, sobbed uncontrollably when I saw how grown-up he looked, and made sure that they saved me a little baggie of the baby hair that he came into this world with. All in all, it was a fun, exciting, emotional day for all of us.

One thing's for sure... although I entered that hair salon today with a baby...I definitely brought home a little boy.
